It would have been easy to switch back and forth between her and Jo in the beginning of the book when they were first seeing each other through the mirror, but I was so excited that the point of view never switched.

I thought it really added to the story to have Josie put everything together for herself. Josie is such a smart girl- brilliant really, but she is also just a teenage girl that recently got dumped by her boyfriend.

So when she looked in the mirror and saw her boyfriend happy with her other self, she saw what she wanted to see. That is what made her go from a good character to a great character in my mind.

There are so many twists and turns in 3: Which made for such an exciting read! I was on the edge of my seat for the whole thing. When I had to stop reading to run errands or to do some work, I was actually annoyed that real life was interrupting my reading time.

Gretchen McNeil knows how to write creepy. Man, the Nox was something I would have nightmares about. I would hate to live in a world with them.

But they were fascinating. Everything in her world was actually. If you are a "world building" fan, you will LOVE 3: Whether you are a fan of fantasy and science fiction or not, you need to read this book.

Mar 28, Nicole Wang rated it it was amazing. Oh my fucking God. I can not live. I can not even. So I absolutely have to start off with the sci-fi aspect of this.

There is a ton of sci-fi in there and Gretchen McNeil obviously did her research. There were so many theories thrown around, not to mention a ton of But the sci-fi is hardcore in 3: And you guys, the plot.

It was filled with suspense and anticipation read: It hooked me in straight away and then proceeded to kill me several times.

Not to mention, the ending? Oh, it just breaks your heart. I just loved our characters who were so brilliantly written much like the rest of the book and so wonderfully flawed, especially in the parallel world.

Josie is the kind of character you have to love. She had her selfish moments and she had her brave ones. Nick was sweet in our world, but, of course, was a dick later on.

But in the parallel world? Oh God, you have to love him! It was disgusting and I sort of hated her. But she was definitely kickass in the parallel world and I loved seeing the few, but definitely interesting, interactions Josie had with her!

This was my first Gretchen McNeil book, but you can count on it not being my last. With the amazingness that is 3: I absolutely was not expecting to love 3: I had high hopes for sure, but I have to recommend to absolutely everyone, sci-fi fans or no, everyone has to read this so they can scream with me.

Apr 05, Christina rated it it was amazing Shelves: All quotes and opinions will be of this version and not from the published edition.

Something more concrete about a possible reunion. Mar 09, Colette rated it it was amazing. Another action-packed thriller from Gretchen McNeil. Every book I read by McNeil is better than the last.

Feb 13, Angela marked it as to-read Shelves: This sounds amazing, omg. And it comes out a few days before my birthday.

Sep 06, Marochka rated it it was ok Shelves:

Dec 24, Jackie rated it liked it. Not a fan of the characters. Nov 13, Joy joyous reads rated it really liked it. In My Own Words: Teens smarter than the average.

Scientific jargons that, surprisingly enough, I was able to understand. Matter can occupy the same space at the same time; meaning, two versions of one person can be on the same plane of existence.

It has the right mix of high octane action, romance and Sci-Fi that did not make my head spin. In short, this book was worth the In My Own Words: In short, this book was worth the read.

This book started out with an unforgivable relationship faux pas: But I persevere because I was on a mission. I somehow ended up with a couple of books of the same subject on my current reads last week: The other book being, Relativity by Cristin Bishara.

Admittedly, I started the latter first and have read more than half of the book already before I decided to try this one on for size. Relativity, unfortunately, was a little slow for my taste.

And I have a premonition that I will not be left with the same dissatisfaction as I now have with this one. Books with this theme typically bore me.

I read it in one sitting. The romance — though started on the wrong side of right — got ultimately better. Aside from Penelope, everyone pretty much took on different personalites.

The differences were startling. In effect, the two versions of Nick and Josephine was exactly how you would envision them in a Bizarro World. Bravo, McNeil for throwing that wrench on what was turning out to be a smooth-sailing plot.

She tells you who the good and the bad guys were. I really like how McNeil used scientific jargons but then she made them sound so pedestrian.

I must admit the Romance is a big seller with this book. Oct 05, Abbie rated it it was amazing Shelves: Beyond a doubt this was a great book.

There was action, suspense, mystery and science fantasy. But that ending made me want to pull my hair out. I love you non-asshole Nick!!!

So anyway, let me just give out a short summary. Josie Byrne is an intelligent young science geek. She becomes an emotional wreck after she finds her beau cheating on her w Why Gretchen McNeil?

She becomes an emotional wreck after she finds her beau cheating on her with her bff. Then one morning she wakes up at 3: She gets tricked into switching places with her parallel Jo.

And the rest of the details you just have to read for yourself. I loved the book. Feb 13, Rebecca rated it it was ok Shelves: When I first saw this book, I was beyond excited.

It sounded amazing and there was no question that I would be reading it sometime soon after it came out. There were bits of it that I liked, but mostly it was an execution fail for me.

The cover is pretty cool, though. That aside, I think this review will be easier to do in list format because it seems easier and because I love lists.

Whoever wrote the summary did a really good job. I appreciated somewhat that McNeil decided to include some of this, but most of the time everything went over my head completely.

Things are explained on a more basic level because of Madison, so that helped, but still. I had no idea what they were talking about with electrons and tons of other science lingo.

Since I was annoyed, I kind of skimmed those sections. But after the break up, she just acted way too clingy. And much later she contemplates staying in the parallel universe with the second Nick even though there are freaking monsters that will eat you when they wake up at night.

None of them really felt fleshed out at all. Madison was the crappy best friend backstabber. Penelope was the science geek.

Nick was the dreamy love interest. Those other dudes he was with in the warehouse in the parallel universe were basically there to be there, and so I had a really hard time finding anyone in this book to care about.

Well, the first Nick cheated on her. The second Nick had nothing to live up to, seriously. His skin has been pecked off and lots of body parts have been detached.

Josie and Nick are forced to be in the same room when it happens, because if they move they might be attacked as well. Sounds pretty horrifying, right?

But almost immediately after it happens they start making out pretty heavily on the ground, and only stop when Josie accidentally brushes a dead foot.

She easily convinces one of the employees to let her up to the fourth floor where she is not supposed to be. She then gets to go back by herself because she "left her purse in the bathroom.

One of them would just happen to have a friend or relative that made getting it possible. And when Josie has need of a big laser, she asks her fake dad to steal it from his workplace and he basically agrees with no issue even though he could be charged with treason if caught.

Josie really should have seen a red flag after that conversation, because it was not realistic at all. I mean, she left everything to be with her mom which I kind of understand given the fact that he dad was evil.

So even though there were a few redeeming qualities found within 3: Jun 17, Tracy Banghart rated it it was amazing.

It was super creepy, suspenceful and cleverly written. I was particularly impressed by the extensive science to her fiction I really enjoyed watching her explore the new world she finds herself in.

And having the juxtaposition of her doppleganger Jo was really cool. In general, "cool" is a really good word for this book. As I said, it was all so cool!

Dec 10, Leah rated it did not like it Shelves: I have been looking forward to reading this book for a really long time. The concept sounded so cool, but in reality it just fell face down flat on the pavement.

I really wanted to like Josie, but this chick was just your typical year old YA book girl who hates her life and whines about everything. What really pushed me over the edge was when Josie started dipping over to the parallel universe and these So disappointed.

What really pushed me over the edge was when Josie started dipping over to the parallel universe and these Nox bird things start showing up You can see it all coming from a mile away and it is just laid on too thick.

Going to mark this DNF and not waste any more time. Jan 26, Danielle is trying to escape reality rated it really liked it.

Great little find here! But there was a sense of humor about it - particularly in how Josie reacted to some situations. And in the snowballing effect of all the drama that piles on her.

All the characters in this book did feel very familiar - the usual stereotypes you see in a teen thriller which made it easy to focus on the mystery of the parallel universes and why Jo is so eager to switch places with Josie.

I was really impressed by how much effort the author put into giving the parallel universes a valid scientific basis. Some of the descriptions and explanations might have gone over my head a little, but it definitely helped to make the world-building realistic.

I love that Josie is smart in science and math and that it helped her get out of her predicament. The resolution of this story was edge-of-your-seat stuff, with a fantastic twist.

The actual outcome for the characters was a little open-ended which was disappointing, but fitting because they were in such a difficult situation.

Kindle Edition Verified Purchase. The title and the minimalist cover immediately caught my attention. First of all, I would just like to pint out hat the book has really short chapters, which I love.

The short chapters also keep me thinking "okay now, Annie, just one more chapter before bed". This book is suspenseful, mysterious, and dark.

The author mixes those elements so well. I kept guessing and making up theories until the very end. Oh my god, I expected some parts of it, but it still tore me up inside a bit.

I really like how despite the book is in third-person perspective, I can really connect with the protagonist.

I feel like I can feel exactly what she feels, especially her confusion throughout sections of the story. A bittersweet thing about the book is the scientific explanation.

While I do generally critique books when they either make no sense scientifically or have no scientific evidence to support the situations, this book makes me question that.

To me, the characters are also a bit undeveloped. I guess the story kept me distracted. I also read her book Ten which I thought was a nice little page turner if not exactly perfect.

So I figured, rightly, that this story would set up a great premise and then have a bit of okay characterizations back it up. What I enjoyed about the story was the mysteries that kept popping up even before the main character stepped through the mirror.

If this spoils the book for you, sorry. I liked all of this. The subtle changes and the big ones. But this is also where the story started to annoy me.

It was pretty wrenching. But, there are bigger things going on, like not dying and saving the world! I am writing this post in response to both the MacIntyre article that has been copiously posted on Facebook, as well as a post by Joey.

They can be found in links below. The problem with this kind of look at the election is that it is just where the pro-abortion activists want the debate to be perpetuated: We will not, at least at the point we are at right now and I would venture to say never , be able to stop abortion.

What would that even entail? The real problem is that most people do not value life. This is the real problem. Even many anti-abortion activists, deep down, do not value life.

An ideology, in the sense that Giussani uses the word in The Religious Sense , cannot value life; every ideology is an idol, a part of reality exalted to the status of totality.

I am NOT primarily anti-abortion. Let me say it like this: That means, the ones who die in the war, those who are euthanized, those who are murdered, those who are on death row, those who cannot afford housing or food, those who are immigrants, are just as valuable as the unborn.

To say that these issues take the backburner to abortion is an ideology, a dangerous one. Honestly, this is not a Catholic moral argument.

What is one life or one million in front of the infinite? Really, where is the unrealistic expectation of perfection that Joey refers to?

I would say it lies in this single-issue mentality of the anti-abortion activists just as much as it is in those who maintain that the best way to vote is not to vote.

This brings me to the MacIntyre article. I agree with what Joey said in his post, that it does not help anything to disengage from politics with so much at stake.

It is certainly eye-opening, to say the least. At this point I agree with certain points of his argument, but disagree with his application of it to American politics a tenuous rejection, but I am leaning more and more towards rejecting it.

I agree with MacIntyre in the sense that he does not see any value in engaging in ideological debates that censure position as Catholics.

Then what do we do? Forget our original reason for our involvement in politics? Play the numbers game? If we do engage, and in the arena of abortion decide to play the numbers game, which is how the pro-choice advocates want the battle to be fought we can talk about numbers all day and never get to the real question concerning the value of life.

The problem is this: Do recognize criminals as persons? Do you recognize the women seeking abortions as persons? I want my political question to be that one.

Do you recognize the fetus and the immigrant to be equally important because they are the kind of thing that has the potential for happiness?

With that as the starting point, to be pro-life is not to be anti-abortion, but rather to be an advocate of the common good via the principles of subsidiarity and solidarity.

Subsidiarity, because life consists of individuals and their communities not ideas and issues , and people should not be deprived of their ability to tend to the needs to which they are able to attend without the interference of government.

And solidarity, because solidarity is the mutual discovery of the desire for that happiness that we all seek, which I mentioned above, which facilitates education and the building of true culture.

Succinctly put, I will vote for the candidate who allows me, and the Church, freedom.
